Formula and example
Paver count = project area × 144 ÷ paver face area × allowance
Base volume = area × depth ÷ 324 × allowance. Bedding sand is calculated at one inch deep using the same allowance.
For 200 square feet using 8 inch by 4 inch pavers with 10 percent allowance, the estimate is 990 pavers. A 4 inch base requires about 2.72 cubic yards, and a 1 inch bedding layer requires about 0.68 cubic yards.
Before purchasing
- Use the manufacturer's stated square-foot coverage when it is available.
- Increase allowance for diagonal layouts, curves, borders and small pieces.
- Choose structural base depth for the soil, frost conditions and intended load.
- Confirm edge restraint, drainage and finished elevations before excavation.
