Free landscaping calculator

Landscape material calculator for soil, gravel, mulch and sand.

Turn square footage and installed depth into cubic yards, an order quantity and an approximate weight for common bulk materials.

Calculate your bulk material quantity

Measure the surface area, select the finished depth and choose the closest material. Include an allowance for settlement, grading and small measurement differences.

Calculated volume6.17 yd³
Suggested order6.79 yd³
Approximate weight10.5 t

Weight is an approximation based on typical loose bulk density. Moisture, gradation and supplier methods can materially change it.

Formula and worked example

Cubic yards = area in square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324

The suggested order multiplies that result by the selected allowance. Approximate tonnes multiply the order volume by the selected typical density.

For 500 square feet at 4 inches deep, the calculated volume is 6.17 cubic yards. Adding 10 percent produces an order estimate of 6.79 cubic yards. At 1.55 tonnes per loose cubic yard, crusher run would weigh approximately 10.5 tonnes.

Measure and order with fewer surprises

  • Split irregular areas into rectangles, calculate each part, then add the totals.
  • Use compacted depth for base material and ask the supplier how much settlement to expect.
  • Confirm whether the supplier prices and delivers by cubic yard, tonne or bag.
  • Check truck access, maximum load and the safest unloading location before delivery.
