The best turf is not simply the tallest or softest sample. Selection should reflect traffic, drainage, maintenance expectations, sun exposure and the finished appearance you want.
Compare the specifications that matter
| Consideration | What it affects | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Pile height and blade shape | Feel, appearance and recovery after traffic | Will furniture, children or pets regularly compress the surface? |
| Face weight and density | Fullness, resilience and material use | Does the sample feel dense at the backing, not only soft at the tips? |
| Backing and drainage | How quickly water can move through the turf | Is the product compatible with the planned base and site drainage? |
| Colour and sheen | How natural the lawn looks outdoors | Has the sample been viewed in direct sun and shade? |
| Application | Safety, cleaning and performance | Is the product intended for pets, putting, play or high traffic? |
Measure before choosing a roll layout
Start with a dimensioned sketch showing the longest and widest points, fixed obstacles, curves, planting beds and access. Turf usually has a visible grain direction, so pieces should be oriented consistently. The most efficient layout is not always the layout with the fewest square feet.
- Divide irregular spaces into simple rectangles and record each measurement.
- Mark the direction from which the turf will most often be viewed.
- Plan seams away from the most visible or heavily used areas when possible.
- Account for trimming, curves and manufacturer roll widths.
The turf calculator adds a planning allowance but does not create a roll diagram. Confirm the final cut plan before placing a material order.
Plan the complete material package
Type and depth depend on the subgrade, drainage and expected use.
Perimeter conditions determine how the turf can be secured cleanly.
Layout and roll count determine tape, adhesive and seam length.
Product requirements and use case determine type and application rate.
Information to have ready when ordering
- Project dimensions and a simple sketch.
- Intended use, traffic level and whether pets will use the area.
- Existing surface and planned base construction.
- Drainage conditions and any low spots.
- Delivery access, storage area and project timing.
Project note: Final product quantities and accessories should follow the selected manufacturer's written specifications and an approved roll layout.
