Build a preliminary roll plan
Confirm available roll width with the selected supplier. Grain direction should remain consistent across every piece.
How the roll calculation works
Rolls required = dimension across the grain ÷ roll width, rounded up
Each cut equals the dimension running with the grain plus the selected trim allowance. Order area = roll count × roll width × cut length.
A 30 foot by 20 foot rectangle using 15 foot rolls with the grain running along the 30 foot length requires two cuts. With 6 inches of trim per cut, the preliminary order is two pieces measuring 15 feet by 30.5 feet.
Layout decisions that affect waste
- All pieces should face the same fibre direction.
- Curves and narrow extensions can create large offcuts.
- Seams should avoid concentrated traffic and complicated intersections where practical.
- A leftover piece is reusable only when its dimensions and grain direction fit another part of the plan.
- Roll dimensions, minimum cut rules and product availability must be confirmed before purchase.
