Measure once, plan several projects

Yard area calculator for irregular landscaping spaces.

Combine a rectangle, circle and triangle, then subtract existing features to establish the net square footage for turf, soil, mulch, sod or planting.

Calculate net yard area

Leave any shape you do not need at zero. For a more complex yard, divide it into several simple sections and repeat the calculation.

Rectangular section

Use for lawns, side yards and other four-sided areas that are approximately square.

Optional curved or triangular sections

Gross measured area600 ft²
Area subtracted80 ft²
Net project area520 ft²

Measure in a consistent unit. This tool assumes right-angle rectangles and uses diameter for circles and perpendicular height for triangles.

Area formulas

Rectangle = length × width

Circle = π × radius². Triangle = base × perpendicular height ÷ 2. Net area = combined shapes minus deductions.

A 30 foot by 20 foot rectangle contains 600 square feet. Subtracting an 80 square foot patio produces a net landscaping area of 520 square feet.

How to measure an irregular yard

  1. Sketch the property and mark permanent features.
  2. Divide the project into rectangles, circles or triangles.
  3. Measure each section at its widest practical points.
  4. Calculate features that will remain, then subtract their total area.
  5. Add an ordering allowance in the material-specific calculator rather than changing the measured area.
